After cutting myself a few slices I took the lemon back to the supermarket, as I suspected that it was not an actual (conventional) lemon.
The evidence?
Dry.
Strange texture.
Tricky to cut.
No distinctive smell.
Inedible.
Turned out I was right - it was in fact a knitted lemon.
